In 2023, the Portland International Conference on Management of Engineering and Technology (PICMET'23) had the theme "Managing Technology, Engineering, and Manufacturing for a Sustainable World." The conference alternates between Portland, USA, and other countries, with the 2023 event taking place in Monterrey, Mexico. Out of the 131 accepted papers, 18 (13.7%) had authors from South Africa, including seven from the University of Pretoria (contributing to 39% of all South African-authored papers). This highlights the significant role of UP in generating knowledge in Engineering and Technology Management.
UP presented six papers in various areas:
1. Strategic Management of Technology (Foresight generation and tools relationship).
2. System Design (Investigating system dynamic models for unbiased Circular Economy decisions).
3. Technology Management Framework (Examining trends in mobile telecommunication systems pre and post Covid-19).
4. Enterprise Management (Assessing the impact of underinvestment in rail and power infrastructure on the mining industry).
5. Sustainability (Operationalizing resilience towards sustainability).
6. Productivity Management (Enhancing profitability and productivity in the fast-moving consumer goods industry).
