The Graduate School of Technology Management and The Project Management Institute South Africa Chapter recently renewed their memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a further two years. The MOU been in place since 2017. It has established a collaborative relationship between the two organisations to carry out mutually beneficial activities to support and promote the art, science and benefit of project management. To this end the collaboration includes exciting joint research projects, student opportunities, improving the linkage between industry and academia as well as jointly running a community service programme in the Mamelodi community.

The community service programme coordinated by the GSTM, the faculty of Economic and Management Sciences and the PMI SA chapter has been running since 2018. It includes a six week, free certificate project management training programme provided by PMI SA chapter members for first year UP BCom students based at the Mamelodi campus. Thereafter, the community projects are planned and implemented by pairing an experienced PMI chapter member with a student group. The chapter member mentors the student group in terms of project management best practice so that the group of students can successfully execute the project in the community. Numerous community service projects such as community vegetable gardens, homeless pop-up Street Stores and projects to provide early childhood development infrastructure and resources have been executed over the years. Both organisations are enthusiastic that this continued partnership will strengthen and advance project management practice, research and education in South Africa.
