Over the years the performance of large capital projects had been perceived as poor in terms of time and schedule. With added variables such as environmental, social and governance (ESG), unrest, wars and global instability owners, consultants, contractors and academics need to search for new solutions to maintain and improve project delivery.
The management of large capital projects remain complex and challenging. Managing projects from idea to conceptulisation, design to implementation, and handover to eventual operations in a responsile and sustainable manner requires special knowledge and skills.
Research in this field covers topics such as project setup and framing, methodology and system development, project readiness assessment, project governance and project assurance. Apart from these fundamental strategic and tactical management functions, the use and impact of technology such as Building Information Management (BIM) systems, digital twins and advanced simulations during the design phases are yet to be qualified and quantified. During the implementation phase the use of automation and autonomous equipment poses major challenges in terms of specialist skills requirements and even labour relations.
Due to their size, complexity, capital intensiveness and long durations, research in the field large capital projects provides great opportunities for cross-functional and cross-discipline research opportunities.
