Music students excel in external exam

Posted on March 24, 2015

Seventeen of the thirty-four music students in the Faculty of Education who chose to write an optional external Unisa music theory exam passed with distinctions and marks of between 80% and 95%.

To top this achievement, music teacher Mrs Ronel de Villiers received a Prestige Unisa Award for Excellence in Music Theory teaching, her third such award since 2012. This time was exceptional as the majority of the music students had no prior music training at all and had to learn music note writing from the beginning.

Congratulations to all the students and especially Zandile Mgidi, Madelie Crafford, Jomarie du Plessis and Tayla Casey, who achieved above 90% and have been added to Unisa’s honorary roll.

Some of the students’ comments after the results were published, were:

“Dit was die moeite werd en ek het myself verbaas”

“It was an interesting module and I always enjoyed learning new theory work”

“For someone who has no music background….it felt like discovering a whole new world”

“Ontsettend interessant en insiggewend, geniet dit baie!”

“It was enriching to learn the theory part of music and it helped me better understand some practical concepts I would encounter in class”

“It was very challenging at first, but when I understood it, it became interesting and fun”
