Record number of first-year students and parents attend Welcoming Day at Groenkloof Campus

Saturday, 17 January 2015 was a joyful day at the Faculty of Education of the University of Pretoria. Approximately 2 300 people were present at the First-year’s Welcoming Day at Groenkloof Campus.

Groenkloof Campus offers a variety of infrastructure delights and outstanding facilities.

What an exciting event is was to see all the enthusiast potential teachers and their parents on campus.

Besides the newly built high technology lectures theatres; the new computer laboratories; access for people with disabilities; modern auditorium; air conditioning; outstanding sport facilities; beautiful and tranquil grounds with green lawns; a dam and many trees, Groenkloof Campus attract people from all over South African and around the globe.  Not only does the Faculty of Education train excellent teachers, it is proud of the outstanding academic and non-academic  staff.

Although not all accepted, the Faculty had more than 3 000 applications from learners who wished to study teaching in 2015.

Prof Irma Eloff, Dean of the Faculty of Education, welcomed the students and their parents and gave a very honest summary of why she loves the Faculty of Education and Groenkloof Campus so much. (Please see speech attached)

Prof Irma Eloff, Dean of the Faculty of Education addressed the more than 2000 people inside the Sport Centre.

Prof Rinelle Evans from the Department of Humanities Education motivated the new comers and gave them some insight on what to expect in the noble profession of education.

Ms Melinda Joubert, the Head of the Student Administration shared the necessary information with the students and informed them about the first-year’s orientation programme and what to expect.

After Jason Bosman, Chair of Jakarandia introduced his House Committee, the students and parents had the opportunity to visit the different stalls and talk to staff and senior students. Besides the five academic departments there were also stalls from Information Technology; Student Support; Student Administration; Client Services; the Education Library; TuksSport and Art.

The campus was filled with a vibrant atmosphere and modern music to make all the visitors and students who is now part of the Groenkloof Campus family, feel at home.
