Erika Mascot and Flower

The Unicorn

Our purple Unicorn has come a long way. The unicorn regularly features in the old Greek mythology. It is described as a figure resembling a horse, with split hooves, beard like a goat and a tail of a lion.

According to hearsay the Unicorn was completely unattainable and it could only be caught by a virgin when he went to sleep on her lap. TheKresins says that Unicorn’s neigh sounds like ringing bells and that it is incredibly strong and friendly.

Today the Unicorn remains a symbol of purity, virtue, immortality, and power.

Erika’s small Unicorn mascot named Libby was made by Prof Alex Duffy and was presented to the House by Kollege in 1969.

In 2016 a statue of the mascot Libby was put up by the HK of 2015/2016.

Our flower belongs to the plant family ‘Ericaceae’. This evergreen flower is known for its exceptionally beautiful flowers as well as its sweet fragrance. There are 500 types of which 470 occur in South Africa. In 1994 this flower was chosen as the Erika emblem.
