Erika History

1969

House Erika was completed of approximately R800 000. House fees were R3 per year while accommodation fees (meals included) were R1, 14 per day. Miss Anoet van der Berg was the house mother. House Erika got 2 nicknames – ‘pineapple’ and ‘Jakobregop’. We received a hand carved chairman’s hammer from House Olienhout and our first unicorn from House Kollege.

1970

The unicorn was bronzed and the first Hysterika was published.

1972

House fees were increased to R4 per year. Poorly dressed gentlemen were not allowed to enter the residence and first years were not allowed to leave the residence with pants on. The House also incorporated 7 new annexes to the residence. We won the price for the best float.

1973

Five year anniversary!! House Sonop stole our Unicorn. We also won the interhouse Choir Competition. First years were known as ‘goeters’.

1974

The House Committee was increased from 13 to 14 members. The additional member was responsible for the annexes. First years that refused to do telephone duty were given 24 hours to leave the residence. On the sport field we won the prize for the most original drastoel.

1975

We were the first ladies residence to win the UP House Song Competition, and also the first residence to receive its own flag.

1976

House Erika and House Taaibos won the prize for the best RAG float.

1977

House Boekenhout stole our unicorn. We ragged with House Taaibos and were known as ‘Taaika’.

1978

For the first time we ragged with House Mopanie and won the prize for the most impressive float.

1979

Another Maroela Rag and we (once again) won the float competition. Our drastoel was known as the ‘academic wreck’ and ended last but won the ‘Most Original Drastoel’ prize.

1980

We ragged with House Boekenhout our rag name was Boekerika and won the prize for the ‘Most Facetious float’. House traditions of one week started this year.

1981

House Kollege stole our unicorn and we ragged with House Taaibos.

1982

First years uniform consisted of an orange dress and black school shoes. House Erika got a new House song composed buy Jani Viljoen. House Maroela stole our Unicorn. House Erika’s new house mother was Miss D. Bosman. A successful Rag House Olienhout known as “Oppie Horing”.

1983

House Erika is 15 years old!!! The hose committee consisted once again of 13 members. We won the Culture Cup and the Ladies Residence Blad prize with our stunning name ‘Eureka’. House Erika ragged with House Maroela and was known as ‘Eroelix’.

1984

‘Erigarrika’ rag name with House Sonop, the first years won the Rautenbauch trophy. We got second place for the Culture Cup and Serrie.

1985

‘Jonkerbos’ rag name with House Taaibos, House Erika won the ‘House Song Competition’. The Eureka also won again.

1986

The House dress changed from brown to Jakaranda purple. We ragged with the Velle (an engineering house) and won the prize for the most original float.

1987

‘Moparika’ rag name with House Mopanie, we won second place with Rag Prestige. The card wipe system is introduced.

1988

We ragged with House Boekenhout our rag name was Boekerika

1989

House Erika comes of age and rags with House Sonop ‘Garika’. We build a winning float and also appeared in the Guinness Book of Records after we pulled a 90 ton Airbus Boeing for 72,42m. Dok and Magaret Jorissen become our new House parents.

1991

‘Elunic’ another rag with Mopanie and the start of float building and Bokjol on the same night led to a winning float!

1992

Another Boekenhout rag. A second place for the float and first place for serrie.

1993

A festival year for House Erika, we are 25!! An ‘Asbestika’ rag with House Maroela.

1995

We Rag alone as ‘Uniqa’ and win the float competition.

1996

‘Maroolsie – Katoolsie’ rag name with House Maroela and another winning float. House Erika shares the Culture Cup with House Nerina.

1997

A winning rag with Boekenhout under the watchful eye of our rag chairperson.

1998

Another Maroela rag known as ‘MIB aka Maroelika is Back’. House Erika is second with Rag and won Serrie.

1999

A rag with House Mopanie which shall be remembered for eternity. An absolute ‘Mopka’ winning rag and Serrie.

2003

A festival year for House Erika we turned 35!!! “Erodnika” RAG with Huis Olienhout.

2004

Second place in Tuks Woman’s Residence of the year. Serrie came 2^nd for the 5^th year in a row!

2005

Best Ladies Residence in Tuks. “Persuit” RAG with Sonop Christelike Tehuis resulting in Winning float, Ladies RAG Residence of the Year and RAG partners of the Year!! Also Academic and Sport Residence of the year. Huis Erika opens her brand new IT Labs for the first time.

2006

3^rd place in TUKS Ladies Residence of the Year. Academic and Sport Residence of the Year. RAG with Olienhout, coming second with float.

2007

Huis Erika becomes the first ladies residence to RAG with Olympus!! An English verse is added to Huis Erika’s House song.

2012

2nd place in TUKS Ladies Residence of the Year. RAG with Sonop as "supERSOnic" and won RAG Float. 3rd place in Ienkmelodienk as the "Red Indians" and won the Basketball finals!

2013

45th Feesjaar. 3rd place in TUKS Ladies Residence of the Year. RAG with Boekenhout as "Yesterera". Academic Res of the Year. Culture Internal Res of the Year with Ane Malan being Culture Internal HK of the Year. Best Culture Evening of the Year with Olienhout for "Neverland". Won Serrie 2013 with "Fembots" theme and also won Best Serrie Band. Came second overall in RAG. Itumeleng Dikobe - Treasurer of the Year.

2014

RAG with Taaibos as "Die Pershond".

2015

Erika won RAG with Rag partners Sonop as 'Persuit'.
The Serende group won serenade with their theme Chefs and went through to compete at Nationals of which they placed third.

2016

A transformation forum was established to address the transformation issues at the residence, Thereso Kekana was the official Transformation HK.
The house name was changed from Huis Erika to Erika.
The first unicorn statue of Libby was put up.
The first years placed third in Ienkmelodienk.

2017

Our RAG partners were Olienhout and we were known as "Republika". They gave us our beaded unicorn and rhino statue.
Placed 1^st with Serenade and the theme was "The living statue".
The first years placed 2^nd in Insync and the theme was “Night at the museum”.

2018

Our 50th Anniversary “Festival Year/Feesjaar!”
Our RAG partners for this special year were Taaibos and we were known as “Taairika”.
The first years won Insync as “Witches in summer school”.
We placed 3^rd Overall in the RAG of Hope day.
