Professional Profile

I work as freelance forest ecologist through FORESTWOOD cc. My interest and focus has always been the composition, biogeography, ecology and management of natural evergreen forests and deciduous woodlands. I operate in South Africa and in most countries of sub-Saharan Africa, with a wide experience in dealing with sustainable integrated multiple resource use of timber, non-timber and non-wood forest products from these woody systems, their rehabilitation (including via invader plant stands and with controlled resource use), and ecotoursim. I often face challenges in resource use, management of invasive alien plants and conservation, because of the need to balance social and ecological needs, and because of fixed mindsets and outdated contemporary policies and practices. Universities and their post-graduate students are some of my clients- I try to expose my postgraduate students to such challenges.
