SEMLI will grow a number of high impact research activities in the fields of sport, exercise medicine and lifestyle interventions for chronic disease over the coming decades.   The impact and relevance of the research undertaken by SEMLI is reflected in its five overarching themes:

 

  Lifestyle Interventions for Chronic Disease:

 Prevention, management and rehabilitation of patients with non-communicable  diseases (NCDs) of lifestyle through patient-centered, comprehensive,  lifestyle   interventions that include the promotion of physical activity & participation in   recreational sport.

 

 Exercise-related Injuries:

 The prevention, non-surgical management and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal   and other injuries in sports, including all physically active individuals   participating in recreational sports.
 

 

 Medical Complications and Illness during Exercise:
 
 The prevention and management of medical complications and illness in sports,   including all physically active individuals participating in recreational sports.
 

 

 

 Sports Performance:  

 Enhancing excellence in sports performance.

 

 

 Sport and Physical Activity in Society:

 Including economics, governance, management, ethics, and education.

Platforms available to the SEMLI for its research activities and development include, but are not limited to: The TuksSport’s athlete base. Learners/athletes at the TuksSport high school. Elite local and international athletes at the High Performance Centre (hpc). UP staff and students, and members of the public that consult with clinical and scientific experts at SEMLI. The South African and international community through the development of electronic platforms for research, teaching and service delivery.

The research activities of the SEMLI do not only take place at the facilities of the Institute on the UP Hillcrest campus. Internal collaboration with UP researchers conducting research in other locations, and remote research platforms is encouraged and will continue to be developed.
