Before joining the Education Management and Policy Studies Department in 2016, Prof André du Plessis was a school principal for thirteen years in a teaching career of 31 years at three different schools. Over and above his formal degree qualifications, he completed two leadership and management courses at the Zhejiang Normal University and the University of Nanchang in the People’s Republic of China in 2009 and 2010 respectively. His areas of specialisation is education law, school financial management and education leadership and management.
To date Prof Du Plessis has supervised and co-supervised 21 M Ed students and 9 PhD students to completion. Currently he is supervising and co-supervising 8 Masters and 15 PhD students. He has published 12 articles in peer reviewed journals, 2 book chapters and 8 full length conference papers.
Prof du Plessis serves on various departmental and faculty committees and has acted as Head of Department on a number of occasions. In 2022 Prof du Plessis received an award for graduating the most Masters students in the Faculty of Education during the 2021 and 2022 graduation cycle. In 2023 he received an award for student centered teaching. He has developed and is coordinating a new professional doctorate degree (D Ed) in education leadership and management which is being offered by the University of Pretoria from 2025.
Prof du Plessis has presented papers at international conferences in South Africa, Switzerland, China and Bulgaria and has been a reviewer for numerous article manuscripts for South African and international journals. He has also examined Masters dissertations and PhD thesis for South African and international journals. He has served or is currently serving as external examiner or moderator for modules at the University of Stellenbosch, Nor-West University, the University of South Africa and Edutel. Prof du Plessis also serves on the Executive Board of the Association for Teacher Leadership and Scholarship (ATLAS) and on the Technical Committee of the International Conference for Education, Teaching and Learning.
