A warm welcome to the Department of Education Management and Policy Studies.
It is with great pleasure and excitement that I warmly welcome you to the website of the Department of Education Management and Policy Studies (EMPS) at the University of Pretoria. The Department of EMPS was founded in 1979 and we have grown into a large department even in international terms. We are a group of specialists working in the broad focus areas of Education Leadership and Management, Policy Studies and Education Law with a variety of sub-foci in the latter areas. The department is a leader in the country in these focus areas in terms of the large scale of research and projects that are conducted.
Our goal is to train professionals, researchers and academics in the African continent who will make a real and transformative difference to their societies. Our current students come from a variety of national and international public and private institutions, such as schools, colleges and universities, government departments, non-governmental institutes, and research institutes. They bring with them a great deal of diverse experiences. The academics in our Department are among the leading publishers in their fields. We aim to provide an enriching teaching, learning and intellectual experience.
The Department of EMPS offers academic programmes in both contact and distance modes, and we are therefore ready to accommodate prospective national and international students in our programmes. The programmes offered at postgraduate levels are high in demand and attracts high numbers of students nationally and internationally. The fact that so many postgraduate students and teachers choose to upgrade their professional qualification with us is indicative of the quality of work done in our programmes, the support and attention paid to students by our staff and the great academic reputation our students and graduates enjoy worldwide.
As a department we pride ourselves on our association with excellent educationists and caring scholars; some of the best scholars that South Africa has ever produced such as the Minister of Science and Technology and former Minister of Higher Education and Training Dr Naledi Pandor who attained her PhD with our department.
The Department of EMPS focus is to educate students for the 21st century by offering adaptive and effective services as well as quality relevant programmes that are responsive to the diverse and multiple needs of local and international students. Globally students are seeking for quality education and institutional systems such the University of Pretoria that can tackle technological, environmental and social disruptions of the 21st century. It is indeed a privilege for me to lead a team of committed lecturers and researchers in the Department of EMPS in providing excellent service to our students.
