News from the front – August 2012

The Department of Education Management and Policy Studies is proud to announce the acceptance for publication of Dr Sharon Mampane’s article ‘Facilitator training for Distance Education Contact Sessions’ in Unisa’s journal Progression. We are also proud of the publication of the articles entitled ‘School desegregation trends in Gauteng Province’ by Dr Christiana Amsterdam, Prof Everhard Weber and Prof Nkomo in the Africa Education Review journal as well as ‘Exploring the role of the principal in creating a functional school culture’ by Dr Keshni Bipath in the International Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences. Well done to all these members!

Prof C Sehoole’s opinion piece entitled ‘South Africa: Challenges of Racism and Access’ appeared in the journal International Higher Education No 68 of the Summer of 2012 and has also been now reprinted in the University World News Global Edition, July 2012. He was also a member of the delegation from the University of Pretoria that visited North East Normal University (NENU) in China, where he had occasion to present a well-received paper entitled ‘Governance reform in higher education’.

On the conference front, we are pleased to announce that Prof Jan Nieuwenhuis’s paper entitled ‘Using Action Research in the Development of a Value-based Human Rights Culture in Schools’ was well received at the Effective School Leadership and Management Conference held in the Grand Airport Hotel in Kempton Park between 2 and 3 August 2012.

Other members of the Department who presented papers internationally include Dr Christina Amsterdam who presented a paper entitled ‘Acquisition and Utilization of Resources by School and Teacher Leaders’ at the 8th International Symposium on Educational Reform (ISER) held at the University of Kentucky in Lexington between 14 and 15 June, and our HoD, Prof Chika Sehoole and Dr Rakgadi Phatlane who co-presented a paper entitled ‘Academic Staff Mobility in South Africa Higher Education: Patterns and Rationales’ at the International Conference on Academic Mobility and Migration, held at the University Putra Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, between 4 and 5 July 2012.

National conference presentations from within the Department include Dr Chaya Herman, who presented a paper entitled ‘Doctoral students attrition in South Africa’ at the Higher Education Close-Up 6 (HECU) conference at Rhodes University in Grahamstown between 10 and 13 July, and Dr Keshni Bipath who presented a paper entitled ‘Mentorship and Beyond, A UP Model’ at the 13th EMASA Conference in Durban between 27 and 29 July 2012.

The department is also proud to announce that Dr Herman has also been invited to act as a keynote speaker at the fourth Postgraduate Supervision (PGS) Conference hosted at the University of Stellenbosch between 24 and 26 April 2013.

Finally, Prof Sehoole has been appointed the chairperson of the Programme Committee for this year’s ANIE Conference. This international conference is hosted by the University of Pretoria between 25 and 27 September, and the theme of the conference is “Internationalisation of higher education in Africa: maximising benefits, minimizing risks”. Assisting him in this task will be the department’s Eric Eberlein and Monicca Makena.
