News from the Department of Education Management and Policy Studies

The following articles were recently accepted for publication:

  • Dr Chaya Herman’s article, entitled “Industry perceptions of university-industry partnerships in doctoral education in South Africa”, for publication in the journal Industry and Higher Education;.
  • Prof Rika Joubert’s article entitled ”The Constitution as a limitation on government power in educational contexts”, for publication in the Southern African Public Law Journal; and
  • Prof Johan Beckmann’s co-authored article entitled Access to and the provision of pre-school education: the trajectory since 1994”, for publication in the same journal.

The Department is also proud to announce the publication of the chapter by Prof Jan Nieuwenhuis, entitled “Qualitative Research” in the book Doing Social Research: A Global context.

Members of the Department have also submitted and had the following papers accepted for presentation:

  • “Legal and social challenges in education: Political and judicial control of education rights in South Africa” by Prof Rika Joubert for the annual Australia and New Zealand Education Law conference to be held from 3 to 5 October 2012 in Roturoa, New Zealand;
  • “A framework of good practices for education leaders in establishing positive school cultures in South Africa” by Prof Rika Joubert and Dr Jean van Rooyen at the 2012 International Forum for Distinguished Secondary School Principals, organised by the National Training Centre for Secondary School Principals Ministry of Education China and held in Jiangyin on 25 October 2012; and
  • “The role of culture in education in a constitutional dispensation that entrenches the right to culture”, presented by Prof Johan Beckmann at the NTCSSP in China on 26 October 2012.

Dr Jean van Rooyen presented the following two papers during the past three months –“The Rose Case-Lessons for South Africa”, presented at the CELP 2012 conference on ‘Interpreting the South African Constitution in educational context’ held at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton on 30 July 2012, as well as a paper entitled “Quality education and equal access: Where are we headed?”, read at the South African Education Law Association’s annual conference hosted at the The Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West on 11 September 2012. Dr Van Rooyen and Prof Rika Joubert will also be participating in the Second World Conference on the Right to Education, to be held in Brussels, Belgium between 7 and 11 November 2012.

The Head of Department, Prof Chika Sehoole, presented a paper at the 4th Annual African Network for Internationalisation of Education (ANIE) conference – the paper was entitled “The role of higher education internationalization in enhancing partnerships and knowledge exchange for development.” This conference was held at the University of Pretoria from 26 to 28 September 2012. Prof Sehoole was also elected to the ANIE Board and will serve as its chair for the next two years – congratulations Professor! He then travelled to Russia to present a paper entitled ”Entering Academia: Conditions and Opportunities for New Faculty in Higher Education” at the 3rdInternational Conference of the Russian Association of Higher Education Researchers, the theme of which was ‘The birth and revival of universities’– this conference was hosted at the Boston College, Moscow, between 16 and 21 October 2012.

In other news, the Department’s Dr Teresa Ogina, Prof Johan Beckmann, Dr Keshni Bipath, Dr Christina Amsterdam and Dr Rakgadi Phatlane hosted a seminar on Circuit Improvement Programmes at the Bolivia Lodge, Polokwane, from 13 to 14 August 2012.

The Department is also very pleased to announce the following Dean’s Awards received at the annual awards ceremony for 2012:

  • Prof Chika Sehoole for leadership in higher education
  • Prof Jan Nieuwenhuis for excellence in research.
  • Mr Eric Eberlein for excellence in academic citizenship

Congratulations to these members of the Department – well done!

Finally, the Department of Education Management and Policy Studies is also very pleased to welcome Dr Samuel Adeyemo, a post-doctoral fellow from the Graduate School Centro Escolar University in the city of Mediola in the Philippines. Dr Adeyemo will be the guest of the Department until October 2014 – please see his biography for more details on the purpose of his visit.
