Policy brief on the just greening of the South African economy in a post-COVID era

Posted on November 28, 2022

The research team of the Energy Economics Unit in UP’s Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) in 2022 completed a study funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on South Africa’s just energy transition and its economic implications.

Prof Margaret Chitiga-Mabugu, Prof Roula Inglesi-Lotz, Prof Heinrich Bohlmann and Dr Jessika Bohlmann produced a policy brief based on the study’s results. The project focused on the economy-wide and regional impact of the South African energy transition under the principle of ‘leaving no one behind’. Besides its qualitative macroeconomic component, the study also examined the quantitative impact of such a transition across a broad range of socioeconomic indicators at national and regional levels. The purpose of the policy brief is to disseminate the study’s findings and inform key stakeholders, industry, academia, and government on the economy-wide impact that the just energy transition (JET) will have on the South African economy.

The policy brief will be presented to the broader GIZ staff on Tuesday, 29 November 2022 and the team is working on publishing a peer-reviewed article from the final research report that they submitted as part of this project.
