Department of Economics celebrates top achievers

Top performing achievers in the fields of economics and econometrics were honoured when the Department of Economics hosted its annual awards ceremony recently. UP alumna Dr Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, who is also the Chancellor of Nelson Mandela University and former Minister of Public Service and Administration, was the guest speaker.

Two students from the Department also won the Economic Society of Southern Africa (ESSA) Founders’ Medal for 2018 in the best PhD thesis and the best honours script categories. Dr Tumisang Loate won in the PhD category, with her research topic titled ‘Essays on monetary policy and planning’. Carla Peyper was the winner in the honours category with the research topic ‘On the rand: determinants of the real effective exchange rate and misalignment’.
