UP makes Business and Economics debut on THE subject ranking

Posted on October 18, 2018

The University of Pretoria has made its debut on the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by subject for Business and Economics, which incorporates the subject areas of business and management, accounting and finance as well as economics and econometrics. The recently released 2019 rankings place UP in the 301-400 band worldwide.

Prof Elsabé Loots, Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences stated, “This is the first time that UP has been ranked by THE for Business and Economics and I believe that this recognises the Faculty’s commitment to advance relevant knowledge and develop employable, innovative and diverse graduates.”

According to THE, this remains the only global university performance table to judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. “We use 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments,” the organisation stated.

THE has also announced that the 2019 business and economics ranking has expanded to include 585 universities, up from 200 last year. The calculation of the latest rankings has been audited by professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), making these the only global university rankings to be subjected to full, independent scrutiny of this nature.

Prof Loots concluded, “We are extremely proud and trust that this recognition will further enhance the reputation of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.”
