During July 2018, Dr Heinrich Bohlmann presented two lectures on economic modelling to City of Tshwane officials, including Executive Mayor Solly Msimanga, and various local and international delegates as part of the two-week long Inbound Economic Modelling and Benchmark Study 2018, hosted by the City of Tshwane.

The first lecture gave a general overview of how economic policy modelling has been conducted in the past and the common pitfalls that exist between the choice of methodology, the modelling process and the interpretation of results by policymakers. The second lecture focussed on how economic modelling, in particular applied general equilibrium models, can aid local policymakers and city planners in making good decisions and gaining a better understanding of who the potential winners and losers of certain policy proposals or economic shocks may be. The lecture also highlighted ongoing collaboration with City of Tshwane researchers in modelling the regional effects of South Africa’s changing electricity-generation mix.
