The workshop was organised by the Department of Economic Development, the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Department of Economic Affairs. The workshop was introduced by Prof Joseph Stiglitz from Columbia University and was held in preparation for a Research and Policy Analysis Programme (RPAP) promoted by the Department of Economic Development to analyse the role of the financial sector in the overall economic development of South Africa. On 6 July 2012 Prof Viegi and Prof Jan van Heerden also participated in the Academic Board of Economic Research Southern Africa.
