Review of Welcoming Week

Posted on March 03, 2019

Welcoming week is the week where first year students can enjoy themselves without the stress of academics being on them. This week was a great time for our Nergies to meet new friends, discover the campus and experience a bit of what student life has to offer. The week started on the 26th of January with our first meeting and a mass social with all the day-houses and even though the rain put a dampener on things our first years enjoyed themselves immensely as some positive feedback was heard from the Nergies (Dregeana), the Nitas (Vividus Ladies), the Fireflies (Luminous) and the Eyas (Docendo).

The week did however really kick-off on the Monday when orientation began, during the day our first years had the pleasure to have lunch with some of the female residences and get to know their first years better. In the afternoons/evenings there were generic socials as well as sport socials where our first years could meet more people from various other residences , these socials included dancing, fun games and building relationships through social interaction.

During this week, between the university orientation programme and our socials, our first year  practiced for 1nsync (universities first year culture event) where we had a group of approximately 75 guys just having a good time and enjoying themselves while building brotherhood between them.

On the Sunday we had a Fun day with the lovely ladies of Nerina where sport was played and our first years could just relax for the last bit of W-week before university really started. That evening we had our final ceremony bringing the week to the end and officially welcoming in the first years.

After the ceremony we had a house braai where the Nergies got to meet some of our semi-seniors and seniors showing the Nergies that being part of Dregeana isn’t only a one-year thing but that there is a future within the house for them.

All in all Dregeana’s Welcoming week program was an overall success and laid a foundation for all the exciting events to follow. Watch this space
