What we offer

As a Day House, Dregeana aims to provide members with the opportunity to compete in all the activities that UP offers. Some of the fun opportunities are explained in more detail below.

Culture

The concept of internal culture within our Dregeana encompasses a diverse array of events, each designed to foster community spirit and enhance the overall experience of our members.

Among these events is the "Expression and Nothing but Vernac," a talent competition of notable repute, graciously hosted by STUKU. This event provides a platform for our members to showcase their unique talents and skills, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual appreciation within our community. STUKU also hosts a variety of other events, such as A Capella, Debate, Public Speaking, etc.

Additionally, the Internal Culture portfolio is tasked with the organization of the annual House Camp, in collaboration with other Day Houses (Usually Vividus). This event is a cornerstone of our cultural calendar, where members from both Houses journey away for a weekend of relaxation and bonding. This retreat serves as an invaluable opportunity for members to unwind and strengthen their interpersonal connections in a serene setting.

The culmination of our cultural events is the highly anticipated House formal. This prestigious occasion allows our gentlemen to don formal attire and enjoy an elegant evening in the company of their partners. The house formal is not only a celebration of our collective achievements but also a cherished tradition that stands as one of the year's most significant highlights. It is an event that embodies the elegance, sophistication, and spirit of our organization, leaving a lasting impression on all who attend.

RAG

RAG, an acronym for Reach out And Give, stands as one of the most expansive charity initiatives led by students across the nation. This esteemed project, which has evolved from its original incarnation known as JOOL (Jou Onbaatsigtige Opoffering vir Liefdadigheid), plays a pivotal role in uplifting and engaging with the community in and around the Pretoria area.

The highlight of RAG's annual calendar is the renowned RAG of Hope Day, or RAGoHD, traditionally held on the Saturday following RAG Week. This week, positioned immediately after the Academic Orientation Week at the University of Pretoria, is a time of vibrant activity and community involvement.

A unique aspect of RAG is the pairing of Residences and Day Houses into random partnerships each year. These RAG partnerships are a deliberate strategy to foster a rich and diverse student life. The week leading up to RAGoHD is marked by daily social events with these RAG partners, serving as a crucial period for all necessary preparations for the RAG of Hope Day. These preparations include the construction of a Box Cart for the race event, crafting items for sale with proceeds benefiting the chosen charity, and participation in various cultural and sporting events. These sporting events encompass five-a-side football, Touch down rugby, and a Talent show, all contributing to the spirit of camaraderie and community service.

Moreover, RAG encompasses both long-term and short-term outreach initiatives to various organizations selected by the students. These outreaches are integral to RAG's mission, as they facilitate hands-on engagement with the community, reinforcing the ethos that giving is more rewarding than receiving. Through these activities, RAG not only contributes significantly to the welfare of the surrounding community but also instills a culture of altruism and service among the students of the University of Pretoria

Social

The House proudly presents an array of social events, both in collaboration with other residences at the university and within our own community. Our aim is to organize at least one social gathering each quarter, yet often, the demand and enthusiasm of our members lead to the hosting of additional events beyond this initial commitment.

These social events are not merely gatherings; they are vibrant, engaging experiences designed to foster camaraderie and lasting friendships among attendees. Participation in these events is highly encouraged, as they offer a unique opportunity to connect with peers, create memorable experiences, and integrate more deeply into the social fabric of the House and university community. By attending these socials, members are afforded the chance to enrich their university life, broaden their social circles, and partake in enjoyable activities that contribute to a well-rounded and fulfilling student experience.

Sport

Dregeana is an active participant in a wide range of sporting activities, catering to the diverse interests of our members. Our involvement extends to nearly all sports traditionally offered to residences at the university, showcasing our commitment to physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Our sporting repertoire includes rugby, soccer, and hockey, where teamwork and strategy play pivotal roles. We also engage in netball, including mixed netball, which promotes inclusivity and collaboration among our members. Basketball is another sport we partake in when available, further demonstrating our versatility.

In the realm of individual sports, Dregeana competes in tennis and squash, where agility and precision are key. We also take part in the UPLympics, the university's track and field event, showcasing our athletic prowess in various disciplines. Our involvement extends to cricket and badminton, sports that require skill and coordination.

Furthermore, Dregeana actively participates in chess, a sport that challenges the mind and strategic thinking. Volleyball is another team sport we engage in, emphasizing our commitment to diverse athletic pursuits.

Additionally, Dregeana takes part in the TuksRes Festival, a significant event that offers a variety of other sporting activities. This festival not only allows us to showcase our athletic skills across different sports but also fosters a sense of community and sportsmanship among the university residences. Our participation in these myriad sports underscores Dregeana's dedication to fostering a dynamic, active, and inclusive sporting environment for all our members.

Transformation and The Mentorship Programme

The mandate of the Transformation role within our House is twofold: firstly, to foster and celebrate diversity among our members, and secondly, to safeguard and promote the mental well-being of all individuals within our community.

Central to this endeavor is the BROGRAM initiative, a program meticulously designed to provide our members with a supportive and empathetic environment. This initiative facilitates one-on-one partnerships between senior members and first-year students, carefully matching them based on their academic pursuits and personal interests. This pairing strategy ensures that first-year students are not only paired with someone who can offer relevant academic advice and resources pertaining to their specific degree but also with someone who shares similar interests, thereby fostering a more meaningful and supportive relationship.

The BROGRAM serves as more than just an academic mentorship program; it is a platform for first-year students to find a confidant and a friend within the House. Whether it's seeking guidance on academic matters, needing tips on navigating university life, requiring access to specific resources, or simply desiring companionship, the senior partner is there to listen, support, and assist. This program plays a crucial role in ensuring that our new members feel welcomed, valued, and integrated into the House community, thereby enhancing their overall university experience.
