Letter from the First Year Guardian

Posted on November 30, 2012

Vividus Men have always been a force to be reckoned with. This is true in all fields
one can excel at Tuks. Our amazing exploits are all due to the fact that we start
forming bonds the moment we become part of the House. This means that the
Nergies (our first years) are the most important people in the House and we, in turn,
help them to become the men they need to be to face the world outside of school.

The term “Nergie” is derived from “Bonergus” in Latin, meaning “Sons of Thunder”.
This is special for two reasons: firstly, just like thunder is an unstoppable force of
nature, so is the House able to compete against the best the residences have to
offer because of our Nergies. Secondly, because of how important the first years are,
they are the only group in the House to have their own special name. The rest of the
House is mainly referred to as seniors.

During the first few months of the year the Nergies are taught to not only know the
values of the House, but to live them. Because of our strong moral code we have
gained the reputation as the gentlemen on campus, a title not lightly earned. Our
members learn how to treat the ladies of Tuks with the proper respect, while also
showing them the times of their lives, be it at a social, the RAG farm or on the stage
of the Amphitheatre.

In the beginning it is quite difficult to get to know 500 first years, that is why the
Nergies wear a distinguishable white shirt, which also labels them as “Sons of
Thunder”. This white shirt has to be worn for the first week during the first years’
orientation every day and every Thursday the weeks thereafter until their induction
before the June exams start. If a Nergie attends the annual Nergie Camp, they get
rid of their white shirts and receive a black Nergie shirt to show off to the whole
world. Once he has acquired a black shirt, the Nergie is allowed to attend the
induction where he will receive his black tie. If a Nergie has both his own black shirt
AND black tie, he will be a full member of the House and will be allowed to join the
various committees that keep the House running.

The year of 2013 is going to be a phenomenal year, because of our Feesjaar to
celebrate our tenth birthday. The Nergies of our feesjaar will be one of a kind and
have first year experiences unique to Vividus Men. I invite each and every future first
year out there to come and join us for this once in a lifetime experience and to be a
part of the history that will shape Vividus Men.
