Developing the future of leadership today

Vividus men is passionate about development and it is one of the main focus arias of the House.  But we also feel that development should stretch much further than the privileged few attending university and should start much younger than first year.  For this reason the Executive committee (EC) decided they will start leadership development at primary school level.  Soon after Juan-Pierre van der Walt, Roelof Kruger and Wynand van Zweel the senior EC (executive committee members with more than one term of EC experience) developed a program with the core essence of effective, responsible and sustainable leadership to present to the pupils.

The seminar covered the arias of: what does it entails to be a leader - aiming to highlight the definition of a leader and reconciling the general concept of leadership on primary school level-. The basic steps to follow in daily leadership - entailing physical steps that can be applied to leadership in the classroom and general school environment- and finally responsible and sustainable leadership - highlighting the importance of leading in a responsible way through empowerment rather than force to encourage a broader spectrum of mutual support between learners, teachers and the learners chosen to lead them.

This seminar was attended by 31 learners from the school as well as the Vice principle.  The learners were encouraged to ask questions in the lecture part of the seminar where the above mentioned concepts were taught.  After that the learners were subdivided into smaller groups where they were facilitated by the EC in practical leadership development exercises and a brainstorming session.

The seminar closed with the learners writing a small paragraph on what they have learned.  This seminar was only the beginning of an ongoing process of leadership development in the school. The long term goal within the next 8 months of this program is to aid the school in developing sufficient leadership skills among their learners so that they can eventually elect a learner representative council whom can lead the school.

Vividus Men have committed to help the teachers and the school in identifying candidates, developing them and facilitating both the election of the Learner representative council and the implementation of the council into the school over the next two years.  We are currently working only with grade 6 and 7 learners.  The long term goal is to work with the entire school with the main aim of developing the leaders of tomorrow today.
