The 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 2016 provided ample room for celebrations and commiserations on Shakespeare in South Africa. Many drama departments at South African universities, including UP Drama, used the opportunity to experiment with what it means to decolonize Shakespeare. UP Drama continued its experiments into 2017. Drama's acting HoD, Prof Marié-Heleen Coetzee, wrote about Shakespeare and decolonisation for the Theatre Times.
