Thanks to the support of the Embassy of Spain in South Africa, drama students and alumni of the Drama department are given the opportunity to take part in Bloodwedding, one of the most important tragedies of Spanish writer Federico Garcia Lorca. 

Italian director Raissa Brighi offers a re-interpretation of Lorca's work. She freely adapted the text by surfacing subtextual nuances and relationships that are not foregrounded in the original play. Bloodwedding is the story of revolt: rebellion against moral laws that condemn women to silence and invisibility. It is a meditation on life and death – often in the context of violence - depicting the tragic destiny of ordinary women rebelling against the constraints society to live out their own passionate feelings.

Bloodwedding tells the old story of a bride who is not allowed to marry the man she loves, as he is from a lower social class. She is forced to marry a rich man, but flees from her wedding reception with her lover. The mysterious figures of Sun and Moon lead the frustrated bridegroom to the guilty pair. Their tragedy is that of a lost love where honour and appearances count for more than love, leading to the inevitable death of the protagonists.

This production of Bloodwedding is an interdisciplinary project, where, thanks to the co-operation of Open Window and Moving Into Dance Mophatong, drama, dance and video all interact to form the theatrical experience.
