Described as one of the masterpieces of the 20th century, this play by Arthur Miller is as relevant and provocative today as it was during the McCarthy political ‘witch-hunts’ of the 1950s in the United States. Themes of power and greed reveal a warning of tyranny on the way, or a reminder of tyranny just past.
“The Crucible” is one of the prescribed texts for Grade 12 English. The production is a must see for teachers and learners who want to invigorate the curriculum and see the play come alive.
“The Crucible” is directed by Pieter Brand and will be performed by an experienced cast of Honours Drama Students : Bianca O’Neil, Carina Eager, Minette Smit, Carien Viljoen, Odia Jordaan, Eddie de Jager, Christelle van Graan, Lizelle de Klerk and MaBlush (Ilana van der Walt). Pieter Brand, a lecturer in the Drama department, is a multi-award winning actor and director, with no fewer than 9 VITA awards, among many others, to his name. He has acted in works by Ionesco, Genet, Feydeau and more, and his roles have ranged from the lead in Macbeth, to Tjokkie in Siener in die Suburbs.
The production is presented by the Drama Department of the University of Pretoria and is supported by UP Arts, at the Lier Theatre Wednesday the 6th until Saturday, the 9th of May at 19:00. Tickets cost R30-00 for adults, R25-00 for students, and R20-00 for block bookings of 20 or more. from
