DIEBOEK directed by Myer Taub 8-11 May Lier Theatre: 18:00

Writer, director and performer Myer Taub adapted the play text The Dybbuk in 2012 so as to weave a new text called Dieboek onto the original. Dieboek speaks to the South African context. The adaptation presents the arrival of a cipher from the original text, the girl called Leah, who is shipwrecked in the new play, set in the village of Krass. The divergence suggests intersections between different worlds and realities. Dieboek deals with the hauntings of identity, displacement and love that is supported by its site-specific setting. It was performed in 2012 and is re-staged in 2014.

It is an original South African text that takes on assumed conventions of theatre and representation in an attempt at activating new forms of storytelling superimposed on more traditional forms of storytelling. The world that is presented is strange, scary, absurd, funny, bizarre and unsettling – all aided by an array of image, site and sound.

The play starts outside the Lier Theatre, University of Pretoria, every evening at 18:00 from 8 May to 11 May 2014 and occurs at various other sites in the vicinity of the University of Pretoria. The medium of the play is mostly English but it is perforated with the idea of multiple languages: Afrikaans, Tswana, Yiddish and German.
