Drama Department presents OTHELLO, Shakespeare: 20-24 May

Posted on May 15, 2014

Othello, the protagonist, is a powerful general, respected by all those around him. But Desdemona, his wife, is the only person in the play who accepts Othello for what he is, with unconditional love, without prejudice, and no ulterior motive. For Iago’s destructive plot to succeed, Othello must not have time to think or question. Therefore the audience is effectively challenged with imaginative involvement because of the notable speed of dramatic action.

Towards the end of the play values of loyalty and affection prove ultimately to be the strongest, as represented by the goodness of Iago’s wife, Emelia.

This exciting production of Shakespeare’s OTHELLO will be performed in English in the Masker Theatre by the creative and experienced Postgraduate Students from the Drama Department of the University of Pretoria, and directed by Pieter Brand, who also directed the box-office hit THE CRUCIBLE by Arthur Miller for the University.
