World of Wonder: A Night of Poetry, Reflection, and Rebellion

Posted on April 30, 2025

World of Wonder was more than a poetry evening - it was a release. Themes of yearning, defiance, and quiet surrender ran through every piece. This wasn’t your typical student showcase. The poets didn’t just read - they revealed. They shook off conformity and challenged us to rethink what it means to be truly seen.

The night opened with a heartfelt piece on unrequited love: tender, raw, and full of anticipation.

As the room settled, a folded note quietly passed from hand to hand - an invitation to join in. Some shared original work. Others read poems that had changed their lives. It became an open circle - welcoming, expanding, alive.

The first half explored love’s intricacies - heartbreak, longing, loneliness, and feminist rebellion took the spotlight. After the break, the energy shifted. We heard bold declarations of identity, rejection of societal molds, and an ode to Pretoria’s streets, people, and pulse.

As the night deepened, so did the courage in the room. More voices emerged; more hands reached for the mic. And yes - his muse arrived. He read the poem about meeting her, blue bucket hat and all.

The evening didn’t end with applause, but with reflection. We spoke of writing when no one’s watching, of using words to reclaim identity and truth.

We would like to thank every person who came, wrote, listened, encouraged, and dared to say, “This is mine”.
