The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

Big African States, edited by Christopher Clapham, Jeffrey Herbst, and Greg Mills.

In this study of six African ‘big states’ specialists across a range of disciplines analyse both the country-specific factors which have led to all but one of these states being described as dysfunctional. They explore those cross-cutting issues—such as leadership, rebellion, lootable commodities and engagement with international political and economic systems which affect all of these states and which may have contributed to ‘dysfunctionality’. Finally, the conclusion considers policy implications that emerge from the study.
