In celebration of World Book and Copyright Day on 23 April, the Department of Library Services (DLS) hosted an online Copyright Refresher session for academic teaching staff.
Librarians play a key role in supporting teaching staff by helping them access, package, and share information responsibly. The session featured two presenters offering insights from their respective roles: Ms Adrienne Warricker, Information Specialist, and Ms Zama Khanyile, the University’s Copyright Officer.
Ms Warricker explained the process of creating course-specific reading lists for upload to clickUP. She outlined the roles of key contributors, timelines, and the importance of timely, complete requests to ensure efficient delivery.
Ms Khanyile focused on copyright compliance, including:
• Steps for creating copyright-compliant reading lists,
• Identifying when copyright permission is required and how to submit requests,
• Ethical considerations and intellectual property rights, particularly for theses, dissertations, articles, and books.
The session highlighted the importance of understanding roles, following correct procedures, and using library resources effectively. By aligning with copyright laws and institutional guidelines, staff can create enriching and legally sound learning materials that support academic integrity and responsible publishing.
