This year, the Department of Library Services proudly joined the national celebration of the Library Week 2025, under the inspiring theme “Libraries for Sustainable Communities.” The library took this opportunity to highlight the role we play in building a more sustainable future - through access to knowledge, awareness campaigns, collaborative initiatives and a bit of student fun.
At the heart of our celebration was a multi-disciplinary book exhibition hosted at Merensky 2 Library, showcasing how sectors such as agriculture, health, fashion, e-Commerce and renewable energy are embracing sustainable practices.
To amplify the theme, the LIASA’s national Library Week posters were displayed across all UP libraries - sparking curiosity and encouraging more foot traffic to the exhibition.
Adding a creative touch, the library partnered with the MakerSpace to 3D print a range of sustainability-themed models, including a windmill, wind turbine to mention a few, and other eye-catching artifacts that were displayed alongside the books in the exhibition. These items visually represented the innovative spirit needed to power sustainable communities.
Engagement didn’t stop there - students were invited to participate in a fun “Sustainable Practices” competition, where they shared eco-friendly habits from their daily lives. This took place both via social media and an interactive whiteboard wall in the library. Needless to say, students went all out, proudly sharing how they contribute to sustainability in small but impactful ways.
The ultimate winner of the competition was awarded a trending UP Tumbler, a fitting and eco-conscious prize that ties perfectly into the theme.
The overwhelmingly positive feedback reminded us of the vital role libraries play in connecting knowledge with action. As we reflect on a successful Library Week, we remain committed to supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals and continuing to serve as a hub for education, engagement, and transformation.
Thank you to everyone who took part - we look forward to many more meaningful celebrations to come!
