The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:
The Kruger National Park: A History by Salomon Joubert.
Combining exhaustive research with 30 years of management experience in the Kruger National Park, Dr Salomon Joubert paints a dramatically new picture of the Park and its meaning to the world, showing how the Kruger National Park was successfully managed over different eras. Kruger’s image as a peaceful, unchanging African wilderness is belied by a century of bitter debate over what its real purpose should be, as our continually changing relationship with nature alters our preconceptions about the wild. Kruger’s founders had no idea that it would become a global conscience and a barometer of the health of our planet. The search for the meaning of Kruger today is as vital an unpredictable as it was in 1898. Dr Joubert makes and urgent, eloquent and startlingly practical case for conserving Kruger’s unique values for Africa and the world at large.
In 2007 the First Edition was acclaimed by academics, conservationists, the media and ardent Kruger Lovers scattered throughout South Africa. Dr Joubert revised the original text and other contents, including the index, to create this Second Edition.
