Community over Commercialization: International Open Access Week Event

Posted on December 10, 2024

At the Department of Library Services, we believe that Open Access should champion the democratization of knowledge, ensuring that scientific and academic research is freely accessible for the public good. In line with this vision, our collaboration with UNISA Library Services for the Open Access event, held in celebration of International Open Access Week, reaffirmed both institutions' shared dedication to promoting equitable knowledge sharing and advocating for transparency in scholarly publishing.

The event, held on 22 October 2024 at the Research Commons Auditorium on the Groenkloof campus, brought together thought leaders and practitioners to explore critical themes in Open Access. Discussions emphasized the role of universities as drivers of impactful research dissemination and as key players in reshaping restrictive publishing models. Topics such as community-governed infrastructure, equitable knowledge sharing, and Diamond Open Access as a catalyst for policy change were presented by experts, sparking dynamic conversations during interactive Q&A sessions. The hybrid format of the event ensured inclusivity, with strong in-person attendance complemented by virtual participation through Zoom, making the dialogue accessible to a broader audience.

The event also highlighted the power of collaboration. By pooling resources, sharing expertise, and working together, both UP and UNISA Library Services demonstrated how inter-institutional partnerships can amplify advocacy for open scholarship. The collaborative approach not only enriched the discussions but also set an example of how institutions can collectively negotiate with publishers, share resources, and create strategies that benefit scholars, students, and society at large.

The takeaway from the event is clear: universities have a critical responsibility to champion Open Access, not just for the academic community but for society as a whole. Through collaboration and innovation, we can foster a more inclusive, impactful, and transparent research environment that prioritizes the public good over commercial interests.
