Storytelling: A Heartfelt Outreach at Mamelodi Campus

On the 12th of September 2024, the Department of Library Services hosted an outreach program at the Mamelodi Campus, designed to foster a love for reading among preschool children. The event took place in the enchanting sensory garden, welcoming the eager young minds from Amogelang Preschool. The community engagement team dedicated the day to instilling a passion for books and reading in these young children.

At the heart of this initiative was the commitment to support vulnerable and underserved members of the community. With infectious enthusiasm, the team read stories to the children, captivating their imaginations and sparking a love for books. These moments were not just about sharing stories; they laid a foundation for literacy and a lifelong appreciation for reading.

After exploring the world of books, the children participated in a toy searching fun activity, eagerly hunting for hidden insect toys throughout the garden. The laughter and joy that filled the air reinforced the team's commitment to making the day both enjoyable and enriching for the children. 

As a token of appreciation and to encourage the children’s budding interest in reading, the Community Outreach team gifted books to Amogelang Pre-school. The children were also treated to food, ensuring the day was not only educational but also nourishing and fun.

We recognise the significant responsibility we have towards our communities. Libraries are more than just academic centers; they are platforms for community development and support. Through outreach programs like these, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering others through education, fostering inclusivity, and inspiring a lifelong love of learning. These initiatives also remind us all that education extends beyond classroom walls - it's a shared journey of growth and discovery.
