Unlock the Power of 3D Scanning at UP

In the ever-evolving world of technology and design, 3D scanning is revolutionising the way we bridge the physical and digital realms. At the Department of Library Services, University of Pretoria (UP), this cutting-edge service is available for free to all students and staff. Here’s a closer look at how 3D scanning can elevate your work and why you should take advantage of this incredible resource.

What is 3D Scanning?

3D scanning captures the precise shape and dimensions of a physical object and converts it into a digital 3D model. Using 3D scanners, the geometry of an object is recorded to produce a detailed digital replica that can be manipulated, analysed, and incorporated into various digital platforms. Whether you’re an engineer, artist, or researcher, understanding and utilising 3D scanning can unlock new possibilities for your projects.

Applications of 3D Scanning

  • Design and Prototyping: 3D scanning revolutionises the prototyping process by allowing you to create detailed digital models of existing objects, modify them as needed, and test new ideas without starting from scratch.

  • Art and Heritage Preservation: 3D scanning helps artists and historians preserve and document artifacts and artworks. Digital records ensure that valuable cultural heritage can be studied and shared globally, even if the original pieces are no longer accessible.

  • Education and Research: In academic settings, 3D scanning enhances teaching and research by enabling students to scan physical models or historical objects and study their structures in detail. Researchers can analyse and compare digital models to gain insights not possible through traditional methods.

  • Medical and Biomechanical Applications: In the medical field, 3D scanning is used to create customised prosthetics and study anatomical structures, allowing for precise modeling and improved patient outcomes. Its importance in both clinical and research settings is increasingly evident.

How to Use the 3D Scanning Service

To use the 3D scanning service, visit or email the Makerspace to book a session and consult with one of the technicians about your project. The 3D scanning service is free for all UP students and staff.

During your session, technicians will assist with operating the scanner and capturing the dimensions of your objects. After scanning, you can review the digital model, which will be shared with you for further use.

Why Use 3D Scanning?

Creating and manipulating digital models from physical objects enhances accuracy, accelerates the design and development process, and saves time. It reduces errors and fosters creativity by allowing users to experiment and iterate quickly.

Visit the Makerspace to discover how 3D scanning technology can transform your creative and design work.
