The Learning Centre (LC) continues strengthening its presence and making the Department of Library Services (DLS) more visible through meaningful partnerships and collaborative events. Over the past few months, the LC has actively engaged students with a variety of enjoyable and impactful activities. Building on the success of the first semester, several notable events took place in August and September 2024. Here’s a recap of some of the highlights:
"Make Today Matter" Activation Session – 22 July 2024
The DLS participated in the "Make Today Matter" activation session to connect with students and promote the value of the library. The event was designed to convey a message that every student matters and is special. With activities such as games, and snacks like apples and popcorn, the LC fostered positive relationships with students. Each interaction made a meaningful impact, helping to strengthen the bond between the library and the student community.
Collaboration with TUKS Campus Tours – 6 August 2024
Following an invitation from Prof. Karen Harris and the TUKS Campus Tour team, the Learning Centre presented on the DLS on 11 March 2022, suggesting that all visitors be brought inside the Merensky Library rather than just viewing the exterior. This approach has significantly increased the number of visitors to the library, including high-profile guests from the United States, school students, and prospective students. A highlight of this partnership was the DLS and Campus Tour Quiz Night on 6 August 2024, which featured hot chocolate, popcorn, games, and lots of fun. The event was a resounding success, and we look forward to hosting more collaborative events with the Campus Tour team. Such partnerships are crucial for increasing the visibility and reach of the DLS.
"Are You a Whiz?" Quiz Night with Education House – 20 August 2024
The Learning Centre hosted an engaging quiz night in collaboration with Education House, aimed at the residences on the Education Campus. The event began with a Library Kahoot session with prizes up for grabs, followed by a fun and interactive quiz night. The lively atmosphere and friendly competition made it an evening to remember.

"Everyday Wonders" Poetry Evening – 23 August 2024
The "Everyday Wonders" Poetry Evening was a joint initiative by Law House, the Learning Centre, and the Law Library, held in the Law Building near the Law Library. The event kicked off with an introduction to the library's products and services, followed by students sharing their poems on diverse topics such as love, abusive relationships, and culture. The MC, Msindo Kensani - a Law House committee member and intern at the Law Library - used her engaging public speaking skills to motivate students to participate and even shared a few of her own poems. She also led thought-provoking discussions that resonated with the audience. Evan Nyamutsamba, one of the attendees, described the evening as follows: “It was a beautiful night filled with explosive verbal artistry from poems of different shapes, backgrounds, and experiences. The gallery of poets brought the flavour, character, and energy of the diversity and beauty of UP-Poetry culture.”
