DLS Final Mandela Day Project: Spreading Hope and Love at Medical and Dentistry Campus

Posted on August 02, 2024

In a heartwarming display of unity and compassion, the Department of Library Services' (DLS) Community Engagement Group recently partnered with student peer advisor Thato Moloi, Sister Nonki Sehube from the Health Science Clinic, Sidney Mokatse from Oral Dentistry, and Mrs. Bold South Africa Finalist Kelebogile Mokgele to extend support to students in need at the Medical and Dentistry campus. On July 31, they distributed "Jar of Hope" soup bottles as part of an ongoing Mandela Day initiative aimed at uplifting those facing difficult circumstances.

This initiative goes beyond simply distributing soup; it carries a profound message of care and solidarity from the DLS community to its members, especially those grappling with emotional and psychological challenges. A total of 95 bottles were collected, each filled with hope and encouragement, accompanied by small care items designed to brighten the recipients’ day.

The event was marked by an atmosphere of positivity, as volunteers engaged with students, sharing smiles and stories. They distributed the soup bottles, reinforcing the message that no one is alone in their struggles. The power of community was palpable as students gratefully received these tokens of support and encouragement.

It’s noteworthy that not all the bottles were distributed during the event. Approximately 14 soup bottles were set aside and delivered to the student nurse’s office. These will be distributed to students who may need them but were unable to attend the outreach event due to class commitments. This thoughtful decision ensures that kindness reaches all who need it.

Heartfelt thanks are extended to the dedicated UP staff members whose generous donations made this outreach possible. Their unwavering support underscores the strength of our community and its commitment to caring for one another. The Executive Committee’s dedication to community engagement projects reflects a proactive approach to fostering a nurturing environment for all students.

In today's world, small gestures like these can have a great impact on individuals facing hardships. It’s about more than just the soup; it’s about creating connections, spreading love, and demonstrating that hope is always within reach. This event epitomised the essence of Mandela Day and the spirit of giving, reminding us all that a little kindness can go a long way in brightening someone’s day.

As the DLS Community Engagement Group looks to the future, they remain committed to reaching out to vulnerable communities and continuing to uplift spirits on campus. Each small act of kindness creates ripples of positivity, reinforcing the idea that together, we can build a better, more compassionate world for everyone.
