On 19 July 2024, the Department of Library Services (DLS) spearheaded a significant community outreach initiative at the Rapelego Drop-in Centre, strategically located in the New Eersterust and Marikana areas. This outreach underscores DLS’s unwavering commitment to enhancing community engagement and addressing critical social needs with efficacy.
The Rapelego Drop-in Centre plays an indispensable role in serving the vulnerable populations of New Eersterust and Marikana. As a cornerstone of community support, the centre provides a range of vital services, including:
- Psychosocial Support: Offering comprehensive counseling and emotional support to individuals and families, assisting them in navigating personal and social challenges.
- Educational Support: Facilitating educational resources and tutoring to improve the learning experiences of children, ensuring that their academic needs are met.
- Referral Services: Identifying families in need of specialised assistance and connecting them with appropriate services and professionals.
- Food Security Initiatives: The centre faces considerable challenges in consistently sourcing food to prepare meals for vulnerable children. Despite frequent food shortages, the centre remains steadfast in its commitment to providing nutritious meals whenever supplies are available. Additionally, the centre runs school holiday programs designed to create a safe and enriching environment for children during their school breaks.
The DLS outreach event at the Rapelego Drop-in Centre was marked by meaningful interactions and a collaborative spirit. This initiative aimed to strengthen the partnership between DLS and the local community, emphasising the importance of literacy, education, and overall health and wellbeing.
During the event, a focus group from DLS held in-depth discussions with the staff at the Rapelego Drop-in Centre, gaining essential insights into the centre’s daily operations, challenges, and the critical services it provides. These discussions illustrated the proactive role the DLS plays in understanding community needs and deploying resources effectively.
In support of these efforts, the DLS donated a variety of dry ingredients to the centre. This contribution will support the preparation of nutritious meals for the children and families who rely on the centre's services, thereby addressing immediate food security concerns.
The commitment of both DLS and the Rapelego Drop-in Centre to fulfil the community’s needs is unwavering. The manager of the Rapelego Drop-in Centre plays a pivotal role in leading these efforts, ensuring that vulnerable individuals receive the necessary support and resources to thrive.
