The DLS’s first project for Mandela Day: "Warm Winter" at Mothwa Haven Retirement Home

Posted on July 17, 2024

In the spirit of Mandela Day, an annual celebration honouring Nelson Mandela's legacy through acts of kindness and community service, the Department of Library Services' Community Outreach and Focus Group Outreach organised the "Warm Winter" initiative to bring warmth and comfort to the residents of Mothwa Haven Retirement Home. This outreach event, scheduled for 15 July 2024, aimed to donate beanies and socks, ensuring that the elderly residents stayed warm and cozy during the cold winter months.

The primary objective of the "Warm Winter" initiative was to enhance the comfort of the elderly at Mothwa Haven. Many of these residents, who have given so much to society, face the challenge of staying warm during winter. Our goal was to provide them with essential winter accessories, such as beanies and socks, which are crucial for maintaining body warmth.

A special mention goes to “Tannie Kitty,” a dedicated knitter in her late eighties, who personally donated 52 warm beanies. Her selfless contribution was a testament to the power of community spirit. Additionally, the colorful socks were generously sponsored by one of our devoted donors, ensuring that every resident received the warmth they deserved.

The outreach event was not only about donating items but also about fostering meaningful interactions between our group members and the elderly residents. The day began with a warm welcome from the staff at Mothwa Haven, followed by the distribution of beanies and socks. We also donated some "soup-in-bottles," layered soup ingredients, with each bottle containing enough for five nutritious servings.

Group members, including Linky Mokgohlwa and Sophie Mohale, who initiated this outreach and worked tirelessly, personally handed out these items along with other group members, taking the time to engage in conversations, listen to stories, and share in the residents' experiences.

Spontaneous music and singing created a joyful and interactive environment. One of the highlights was the residents participating in singing "Goodness of God" by CeCe Winans, an American gospel singer. This song brought joy and contemplation to everyone present. To add a touch of sweetness to the day, lollipops were handed out to the residents.

The "Warm Winter" initiative was more than just a charitable act; it was a testament to the power of community and the importance of caring for our elders. By providing warmth and companionship, we honored the values that Nelson Mandela stood for - compassion, empathy, and unity.

Let us embrace the spirit of Mandela Day by making a difference, one warm gesture at a time.
