On the evening of Tuesday, March 12, 2024, the library auditorium buzzed with excitement as the latest addition to a series of literary critiques on Afrikaans literary giants was unveiled.
Leading the event was Professor Willie Burger, the head of the Afrikaans department at UP, who proudly serves as the editor of "Karel Schoeman – Stiltes en stemme, ’n huldiging". Published by Naledi, this volume is part of a distinguished series spotlighting the influential voices within Afrikaans drama, poetry, and literature.
Attendees from various walks of literary life, including academics, students, members of the Akademie, publishers, researchers, library staff, and other enthusiasts, gathered to witness Professor Burger engage in an enlightening conversation with colleague Dr Jacomien van Niekerk.
Professor Burger, along with Professor Helize van Vuuren, had previously collaborated on a 2002 publication delving into Schoeman's work: "Sluiswagter by die Dam van Stemme: Beskouings oor die werk van Karel Schoeman", published by Protea Boekhuis. With this expertise, Professor Burger was well equipped to spearhead the latest endeavour.
Given Schoeman's inclination towards privacy, researching and writing about him posed a challenge due to the scarcity of information. Dr Nicol Stassen, from Protea Boekhuis, a prominent publisher of Schoeman's works, contributed a comprehensive bibliography and unearthed previously unseen photographs, enriching the understanding of Schoeman's literary legacy.
Professor Burger shed light on a recurring theme in Schoeman's oeuvre – that of the solitary traveller, mirroring aspects of the author's own life. Schoeman's knack for vividly portraying his characters' internal journeys ensures his enduring legacy.
Following Professor Burger's insightful discourse, attendees had the opportunity to peruse a curated display of Schoeman's works in the foyer, arranged by the Afrikaans information specialist. Refreshments provided a convivial backdrop for further discussions and photo opportunities, encapsulating the spirit of literary camaraderie.
