In the realm of academic excellence, mastering the tools of the trade is paramount. The recent series of workshops hosted by the Research Commons has provided a platform for scholars to hone their skills and elevate their academic endeavours.
Microsoft Word Formatting Workshop, 13 March 2024: Led by Jacqueline McTamney, this workshop focused on advanced formatting techniques for thesis and dissertation documents in MS Word. Attendees explored formatting tips and tricks at the Merensky 2 library. Skills covered included formatting the table of contents, modifying headings and page breaks, page numbering, indents, spacing, referencing, citations, and find and replace edits.
IBM SPSS Workshop for Beginners, 27 March 2024: Led by Lehlogonolo Tabana, this workshop attracted 18 attendees eager to enhance their data interpretation and research presentation skills. Attendees learned statistical analysis using IBM SPSS, covering software description, installation, primary screen views, variable properties, and basic functionalities. Collaboration was encouraged through group activities to ensure an understanding of workshop content.
Advanced Excel Workshop, 12 April 2024: Hosted by Research Commons Junior Information Assistants, Hope Kubeka & Lehlogonolo Tabana, this workshop drew over 80 attendees seeking to advance their Excel skills. Topics included advanced Excel functions, data analysis methods, and creating visually appealing graphs and charts. Attendees provided positive feedback on the extensive training, and the instructor guidance. One participant noted, "The training was comprehensive and extremely beneficial for my studies and research work. It was my first experience with Excel training, and I found it easy to follow." Another attendee remarked, "The instructor effectively explained concepts and demonstrated patience throughout the session."
