The library’s contribution to the Postgraduate Information Day 26 April 2024

The library made a significant contribution to the Postgraduate Information Day held on 26 April 2024. Organized by the Department of Enrolment and Student Administration (DESA), the Postgraduate Information Day aimed to enlighten prospective postgraduate students about their academic journey. The event took place from 10:00 to 15:00 at the Amphitheater and Musaion on the Hatfield Campus, drawing participation from various faculties and support service departments of the University of Pretoria.

The library's involvement encompassed two key aspects: exhibitions and panel discussions. Lesego Makhafola, Senior Coordinator for the Research Commons, was invited to join a panel to discuss the support provided by the Research Commons. Meanwhile, the library team set up an exhibition table showcasing valuable library resources and offerings, complemented by small gifts courtesy of the library’s marketing office. Students had the opportunity to engage with library staff, who provided insights into the library's history, facilities, workshops, and research support services available through the Research Commons.

During the event, students expressed astonishment at the wealth of information resources and services offered by the UP libraries. Some remarked on their newfound awareness, with comments such as, "Whoa! I spend so much time in the library, but I didn't know about the resources offered by the Research Commons." Others eagerly anticipated utilizing specific facilities, as one student quipped, "Once I start my Master's Degree, Seminar Room 1 will be my second home for its video conference facility, and the coffee station will be my refuge." Laughter filled the air as students and library staff shared moments of connection, reflecting the success of the motivational event in exceeding expectations and fostering a sense of community among prospective postgraduates.

The event also sparked curiosity about Libby, with students inquiring about her whereabouts and, humorously, one student asked, "Who killed Libby?" Overall, the day was a resounding success, marked by meaningful connections and a palpable sense of belonging for prospective postgraduates embarking on their academic journeys. The library extends its gratitude to DESA for the invitation to participate in this enriching event.
