Reflecting on the Success of Hybrid Teaching and Learning Week for Students

Posted on April 30, 2024

The Department of Library Services (DLS) transformed campuses into dynamic hubs of experience during the recent Hybrid Teaching and Learning Week for Students. This innovative initiative aimed to cater to the diverse needs of students while also raising awareness of DLS products, services, and spaces. Collaborating with Student Affairs, we provided students with opportunities to meet their peer advisers. Here are some of the highlights of this enriching week.

One standout event was the exhilarating "Amazing Race," where students embarked on a thrilling journey of academic challenges while discovering library spaces, services, and products. The grand prize, a state-of-the-art Bluetooth speaker, added an extra element of excitement to the competition.

Another engaging aspect of the week was the insightful peer presentations on the value of the library in academic pursuits. Peers shared their experiences and insights, highlighting the vast resources and opportunities available within DLS libraries. These presentations served as a reminder of the invaluable role DLS plays in fostering academic growth and research excellence. Additionally, a series of informative sessions were held on topics such as time management and customising social media algorithms to personal interests and needs. These presentations not only showcased the depth of knowledge within our student community but also fostered a culture of peer-to-peer learning from library ambassadors.

The Academic Writing workshop provided students with practical tips and strategies to enhance their writing proficiency. Sessions on navigating and finding relevant e-resources, information on the DLS website, and plagiarism were also included.

The Jotello F. Soga Library embraced the spirit of the Teaching & Learning Week by organizing a mini Amazing Race involving both staff and students. Ten activities were designed to enhance students' library skills, including finding books on shelves and familiarising themselves with resources like Anipedia. Participants also engaged in fun tasks like taking selfies with information specialists and historical items. The event culminated in a Big Draw where prizes, including a Bluetooth conference speaker, were awarded. The enthusiasm even extended beyond the event, as one student organised a similar race for a friend's birthday.

The Health Sciences Library served as a hub of knowledge and tranquility throughout the week-long workshop. Activities ranged from informative sessions to playful ones, offering a holistic experience. Attendees had the opportunity to explore virtual reality through the VR Toybox, discovering its educational potential while enjoying themselves. Guidance on room bookings, navigating the library, and accessing resources remotely was also provided. A highlight was a presentation by Doreen Obeng from Up-to-date, shedding light on this widely used database in the Health Sciences field.

During the Teaching and Learning Week at the Music Library, a session was hosted, which was highly engaging and enjoyable for students. Brain fitness activities provided by Prof. du Toit aimed to keep students' minds sharp and agile, along with insights on simplifying complex problems. Approximately 50 students attended the session, with the majority being music students.

The Education Library offered specific training sessions on plagiarism and referencing, while the Oliver R Tambo Law Library held an exhibition on their products and services.

Initiatives like the Teaching and Learning Week empower the next generation of leaders and innovators and foster collaboration. Together, we can navigate the ever-evolving landscape of education.
