Capturing the Weight of Knowledge: A Tribute to the Merensky 2 Library in Graduation Photographs

Posted on April 30, 2024

Anna-Mart van der Post, a recent University of Pretoria graduate, selected the Merensky 2 Library as the backdrop for her graduation photographs. Here is her story:

In the realm of architecture, a compelling narrative unfolds about an architect who dared to envision the epitome of a library. With meticulous attention to detail, every facet of his design was executed flawlessly. Yet, as time passed, an unforeseen challenge emerged, testing the very foundation of this literary haven. Gradually, the library began to sink into the earth beneath it. The architect, despite his brilliance, had overlooked a crucial element: the weight of the books. This oversight stands as a poignant metaphor, resonating deeply within my own journey.

It is precisely why I opted to immortalize my graduation amidst the hallowed shelves of the Merensky 2 Library—a testament to the profound impact of the knowledge contained within its walls. Throughout my pursuit of architectural studies, there lingered a persistent concern: that I might neglect the invaluable wisdom held within those tomes. My achievements owe a debt of gratitude to the countless volumes I used, the authors who penned them, and the tireless efforts of librarians who made them accessible. To all who supported me along this path, ensuring I never lost sight of the significance of these books, I am profoundly grateful.

These graduation photographs serve as a poignant reminder, urging me never to underestimate the weight of knowledge, nor the transformative power of learning and the unyielding thirst for wisdom.
