Research week: Innovate, Impact, Illuminate: Navigating the Research Frontier

The Department of Library Services (DLS) is thrilled to extend a warm invitation to the upcoming Research Week event, scheduled from 22 to 26 April 2024, under the compelling theme: “Innovate, Impact, Illuminate: Navigating the Research Frontier.”

This theme embodies our commitment to exploring the contemporary landscape of research support. We aim to empower UP researchers with the tools, insights, and collaborative frameworks necessary to extend the limits of what can be achieved.

Day 1: Opening Day – Setting the Scene

The Research Week Event will commence with leading figures in academia, engaging in discussions on the future of research and innovation. These distinguished speakers will delve into emerging trends and tools, as well as ethical considerations and implications of AI in research.

Day 2: World Book and Copyright Day

Day two of our event will focus on crucial topics surrounding copyright, Intellectual Property (IP), and plagiarism within the realm of research. Additionally, we are honoured to host a speaker from DALRO who will provide insights into the amended copyright bill and its implications for the research community.

Day 3: Innovate/Impact

Day three will be dedicated to exploring the array of research tools available for measuring research impact and mastering the utilization of metrics to assess and amplify the influence of your research. Additionally, we will delve into discussions on new technologies and cutting-edge research tools and software.

Day 4: Illuminate

The DLS Scholarly Communication team will guide you through the advantages of Open Access Publishing, emphasizing its transformative potential. Additionally, they will explore Transformational (Ready & Publish) Agreements and discuss APC funding as an extra measure to support researchers in publishing within open-access journals. Furthermore, a live demonstration will showcase the UP Institutional Repositories, highlighting their significance and functionality.

Day 5: Closing Day – Looking Ahead

During the final day of the Research Week event, our focus will shift towards examining the next decade in research. We will explore predictions for the future of research and discuss strategies for adequately preparing ourselves. Additionally, esteemed speakers will delve into the implications for authors from the global south, including those affiliated with UP, while also addressing pertinent issues surrounding publication fees. We are thrilled and deeply honoured to conclude our Research Week with the esteemed presence of Professor Claire Helen Quinn from the University of Leeds, a distinguished expert in Natural Resource Management. Professor Quinn will graciously impart her invaluable insights on the vital topics of Equity and sustainability within international partnerships.
