2024 Graduates Placements/ Internship Programme

The Department of Library Services at the University of Pretoria (UP) is offering opportunities for six (6) Interns for placement in Information Science as well as Information Technology. The successful candidates will be placed across the UP Libraries. UP offers this opportunity to candidates who wish to gain practical work experience and exposure and have already completed their first degree. This is in line with UP’s ‘Ready for Work’ initiative for UP graduates.

Key Responsibilities

In general, the responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Information Specialist services;
  • Cataloguing;
  • Access and Lending;
  • Special Collections;
  • Research Services;
  • Acquisitions, receiving and eResource;
  • Help desk;
  • Maker Space;
  • Digitisation;
  • Open Scholarship;
  • Copyright;

Any other responsibilities related to the library services not included in this list.

Prior work experience not required.

All successful candidates will receive training/mentorship; thus, prior work experience is not required.

A detailed internship programme will be followed, and a mentor will be assigned to each intern to provide guidance,assess performance on the assigned tasks and responsibilities and assist in professional growth.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

The Interns should at least have but not limited to:

One (1) position available

  • BSc (Computer Science), BIT (Information Systems), BIS Multimedia;
  • Languages: English (spoken and written);
  • Between 18 and 35 of age; and
  • Unemployed UP graduates.

Five (5) positions available

  • A three-year library degree (e.g., BIS);
  • Four-year library degree (e.g., B. Bibl, PG Dip. LIS or B. Inf (Hons);
  • Languages: English (spoken and written);
  • Between 18 and 35 of age;
  • Unemployed UP graduates.

In accordance with the Employment Equity Plan of the University and its Employment Equity goals and targets, preference may be given but is not limited to candidates from under-represented designated groups.

Duration 8 months

The interns will receive a monthly stipend which will be disclosed to the successful candidates.

The internship will commence in April 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
