Donation to Special Collections: Acetate records of W.F. Nkomo's speech

Posted on February 20, 2024

In December 2023, Mr. James Greaves, a member of the public, reached out to Special Collections regarding a distinctive set of yellow-gold acetate records. This collection contained a recording of a speech delivered by William Frederick Nkomo in 1954.

During the 1950s, Dr. Nkomo developed a keen interest in the Moral Re-armament Movement, participating in various international conferences related to the movement. In the recorded speech, Dr. Nkomo articulates his belief that moral rearmament offers the most promising outlook not only for South Africa but also for humanity at large.

These records will become part of our Struggle History Collection. The generous donation encompasses both a digital copy and a transcript of the speech, ensuring its preservation for future reference.

The Special Collections unit within the Department of Library Services assumes a stewardship role, actively involved in acquiring and preserving the Library's rare and valuable information resources. This commitment aims to make these resources readily accessible to students, staff, and researchers, while concurrently safeguarding them for the benefit of future generations.
