Reflecting on Three Decades of Library Service: A Farewell Note from Louisa Buys

Posted on December 14, 2023

In April 1990, I embarked on a journey at the Library, starting my career in the bustling Reserved Collection. I vividly recall it being one of the busiest days, and without hesitation, I jumped in to assist the clients. Little did I know that this would mark the beginning of a remarkable thirty-year chapter.

Throughout the years, my home has been on Level 3 in the Merensky 2 Library. From the Reserved Collection to Access and Lending, the Cyberspace, and later the Information Desk, I have dedicated myself to client service, making it my unwavering priority.

Memorable moments have defined my tenure, such as the exhilarating first-year orientation with Gerda and fellow colleagues. Standing on stage in the Aula, addressing a thousand engineering students, remains etched in my memory—an experience both stressful and exhilarating.

Over the last three decades, we've weathered various constructions, and through it all, I've adopted the mantra: "This too shall pass."

Working at the library presented countless growth opportunities. I've learned extensively, conquered fears, and realized that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. From the days of the card catalog to working with a robot, the library has been a dynamic learning environment.

As I bid farewell, what I will miss most are the friendships forged within the Department of Library Services - connections that transcend the professional realm and will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Embracing the prospect of a new stage in life, my husband and I are excited about the adventures and memories that await. Foremost among them is the joyous journey to Vancouver, Canada, where we eagerly anticipate meeting our new grandson born this October.

To my colleagues and friends at the Library, thank you for an incredible thirty years. Here's to new beginnings, lifelong friendships, and the boundless possibilities that lie ahead.
