The Positive Impact of the 2023 Internship Experience at the Department of Library Services

Posted on December 14, 2023

The Department of Library Services (DLS) embarked on its inaugural internship program in 2022, aiming to empower newly qualified students in the field of library and information science with practical experience. Building on the feedback received from the first cohort, the DLS refined its approach in 2023, resulting in a transformative experience for two outstanding interns, Jesse Morele and Arise Dzamukeri, who contributed significantly to the Library from July to December 2023.

In contrast to the previous year's exposure to various facets of the library, the focus in 2023 was on providing specialized knowledge to foster in-depth expertise. Jesse and Arise were assigned to the Library Technical Service (LTS) unit, where their contributions left a lasting impact on multiple collection projects. Additionally, they gained valuable experience in cataloguing and metadata operations, while also supporting the Scholarly Communications unit by assisting in the submission process for UPSpace articles. Their base on level 2 provided insight into the workings of the Economic and Management Sciences Faculty Library, exposing them to research support alongside information specialists.

While the primary objective was to facilitate their learning, Jesse and Arise seamlessly integrated their wealth of knowledge with the LTS unit's experiences. Jesse delivered a captivating presentation during the October LTS monthly meeting, sharing insights into project management that fascinated the LTS team. In November, Arise followed suit with an enlightening presentation on User Experience that resonated deeply. These presentations not only showcased their knowledge but also demonstrated their expertise in crafting engaging and creative delivery methods.

As their time in the DLS concludes, the impact of Jesse and Arise's contributions reverberates within the department. The exchange of knowledge and the integration of fresh perspectives have left an enduring mark on the Library. Their seamless integration into various library units exemplifies the symbiotic relationship between mentorship and the eagerness to learn.

The DLS expresses deep appreciation for the invaluable contributions made by Jesse and Arise and eagerly anticipates witnessing their future growth and success. Their journey has not only enriched their own skill sets but has also strengthened the foundation of knowledge-sharing and collaborative learning within the DLS. As we bid them farewell, their legacy of insightful contributions and collaborative spirit will continue to inspire future intern programs within the Library.
