The first Starlit Poetry Jam at the DLS (Department of Library Services)

Posted on October 27, 2023

When the stars are out the poetry will begin!

On 28 September 2023, the DLS hosted their first Starlit Poetry Jam event, in collaboration with the BCom Marketing Honours students. The night felt magical with fairy lights and lanterns to set the mood. Students from all departments signed up to come and listen to the beautiful poetry or perhaps to present some of their poetry. The words shared were inspiring and some even led to tears, for emotion was evident in their words. Some of the themes discussed were a life of happiness and sadness; words of encouragement and destruction; love and heartbreak; and new beginnings for all.

All the struggles of the audience were left behind and transformed into inspiring poetry. Students shared their stories and opened themselves up to being very vulnerable. These Poems brought both hope and courage to move forward. Although the Merensky 2 Library offered complimentary popcorn it soon was discovered that this was not the main point of attraction. The twenty-nine amazing poems, all written by students, were the main attraction. It was clear that everyone loved every poem and voting for the best few poems was not an easy task. Every poet made us proud.

After the night had finished, the hype for the next poetry night had already begun. Students hope to have another one of these amazing events hosted by the library.  The Merensky 2 Library is more than a place to study and that is what these events are for. Showing students that the DLS is there to help and make their university and academic journey an adventure. The DLS is looking forward to hosting and partnering with students for more of these awesome events.

Excited students waiting for the event to begin!
